Description of Research Group:The Multimedia Communications Laboratory keeps pace with international standardization strategies and development needs, focusing on research in multimedia communications and intelligent information acquisition and processing. The team has published over two hundred papers in flagship journals and international conferences in the multimedia field, and authored several important books in this area, including Next-Generation Versatile Video Coding H.266/VVC: Principles, Standards, and Implementation, which provides key reference materials for multimedia coding work in China. At the same time, representing Xidian University, the team has participated in the formulation of multiple multimedia-related standards led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) of ISO/IEC, and China's Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS) Working Group. Among these, the families of standards the team helped develop includes H.266/VVC video coding, AVS3 video coding, MPEG-I 3D graphics coding, AVS spatio-temporal graphics coding, and ITU-T P.1201 multimedia quality assessment. All those standards are among the most authoritative and widely used multimedia coding and evaluation standards worldwide. Cumulatively, the team has submitted more than 300 proposals to international and domestic standards, with more than half adopted; the group has filed or been granted over 300 patent families in China, the United States, Europe, and other regions.
Dr. Anthony TRIOUX, Senior Member, IEEE, was an Assistant Professor at Centrale Lille, France, from 2019 to 2020, and a tenured Associate Professor at Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (UPHF) / INSA Hauts-de-France, France, from 2020 to 2022. Since January 2023, he is an Associate Professor with the School of Telecommunications Engineering, Xidian University, China. His current research focuses on multimedia communications, 3D media representation and compression, visual quality assessment, and related international standardization.

His research interests mainly lie in the field of multimedia communications, including but not limited to: 3D media compression and transmission (including avatar coding), low-bitrate Generative Face Video Coding (GFVC), error resilience and reliable video communications, and ultra-low-latency video coding and transmission for UAV and V2X scenarios.
Working on the full chain of efficient multimedia signal representation, coding/transmission, and visual perception, he has produced more than 100 research outputs, including journal papers, conference papers, standardization proposals, and related scientific contributions. His work has been published in high-level venues such as IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, and major international conferences including ICME, ICASSP, and DCC. Several of his technical contributions have also been adopted into ISO/IEC MPEG international standardization activities.
In the area of international standardization, Dr. Trioux has been deeply involved in ISO/IEC MPEG and related activities over the past years, with sustained contributions in digital human representation and coding, animation stream compression, and quality evaluation methodologies. To date, he has submitted more than 50 international standardization proposals, with more than half already adopted. He currently serves as Co-chair for the MPEG Adhoc group on animation compression, technical coordinator for Common Test Conditions (CTCs) and quality evaluation for 3D Gaussian Splatting coding, and technical coordinator for digital human representation and coding.
In terms of academic service and professional recognition, he has been elected as a member of the IEEE SPS MMSP-TC, IEEE CAS MSA-TC, and IEEE CAS VSPC-TC. He also serves as Associate Editor for two SCI-indexed journals, namely Signal Processing: Image Communication and the Journal on Image and Video Processing, and has delivered multiple tutorials, invited talks, and special presentations at major international venues such as ICME and VCIP.
Regarding international collaboration and project implementation, as a foreign expert working full-time in China since 2023, Dr. Trioux has been awarded several talent and foreign expert programs, including the State Foreign Expert Individual Program (2024–2025) and the Shaanxi Foreign Expert Service Program (2024, 2026). He also serves as the project leader of the Xi’an International Science and Technology Cooperation Base on Key Technologies and Applications of Visual Media Communications. So far, he has invited five foreign experts to China for academic visits and exchanges, and has established a stable international cooperation network supporting long-term research collaboration and project development.
